Ian Maatsen has just been nominated for the Championship player of the month award after a January in which he truly dominated the league.
Playing at left back for Vincent Kompany’s high flying Burnley, Maatsen has been superb all season, but the last month saw him particularly productive in the final third. Now 20, the kid in into his third really strong spell on loan – surely his last outside the Premier League.

As Chelsea Loan Army pointed out in his Tweet, the numbers are undeniable. This kid is the real deal:
Ian Maatsen's last 4 games:
• 2 goals
• 2 MOTM Awards
• Assist
• 14 tackles
• 93 touches per game
• Nominated for Championship POTM pic.twitter.com/IxmcQjixdT— Chelsea Loan Army (@ChelseaIoanArmy) February 9, 2023
As much as two goals and an assist in 4 games for a full back is wild, we love to see the 93 touches per game more than anything. It shows a player really comfortable on the ball, who is clearly an important attacking outlet for his team.
That should translate well to Chelsea, who are likely to be even more on the front foot than Burnley in most games.
