Edson Alvarez has revealed that he was very sad over a failed transfer to Chelsea.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Alvarez said “I mourned for one day” in relation to the failed transfer. Chelsea went after Alvarez in Todd Boehly’s first summer in charge, the club were searching for a defensive number six following injuries.
Rumours at the time later suggested Thomas Tuchel was happy with the midfield despite the injuries, insisting that Chelsea “hadn’t lost these players, they will come back from injury”.
Alvarez was a unique option at the time as he also had experience playing centre back, something which could have been useful for Thomas Tuchel’s back three.
Despite the expectation that Chelsea will go for a more defensive option in midfield to partner Enzo Fernandez this summer, Alvarez is not expected to be amongst the options. Denis Zakaria could even have his buy option of around 28 million pounds triggered, should he continue performing well.
