How Chelsea kept Potter decision secret and how coach took the news

Graham Potter has been sacked – pretty much without warning – and now it’s time for all the insiders and top football writers from all over to pretend they knew it was coming.

David Ornstein is without doubt well connected when it comes to clubs and transfers, but even his column in The Athletic doesn’t pretend to have any inside information about the decision to sack Chelsea’s coach.

He says that it all happened so fast that even on Sunday morning some members of Chelsea’s hierarchy were convinced that Potter would still be around for the Liverpool game tomorrow, and that the coach was told the bad news face to face to avoid any leaks.

It’s said he took the news “in an incredibly professional manner.” We’re not sure what this means – that he didn’t cry or get angry? But either way a presumably vast payoff has been agreed, and the former Brighton coach is now free to go and take up another top job.
