Mason Mount has just put up a post on Twitter saying that he is deleting his account.
He notes that he’s “enjoyed connecting” with fans over the years, but due to the “platform changing” he’s decided to move on.
Of course the reality is that it’s likely nothing to do with the platform changing, and more to do with the abuse he gets from online Chelsea fan trolls. Some have joked that he just doesn’t want to pay for the Blue tick on the new Twitter.

It’s a sad sight, for Mason personally but also for football in general. Twitter, especially in its early years, gave us a fresh and raw and personal insight into the lives of players. Now it seems that window is going to be closed forever, and we will be back to heavily controlled, media based interviews.
Given the insane abuse they get for no reason, it’s hard to blame them.

Smart. It’s unfortunate that social media has trended increasingly toward becoming a complete cesspool and still more unfortunate that folks like Elon Musk seem to care nothing about restoring/maintaining norms of respect and decency (and, above all else, a little objective truth). I’m sure “unplugging” from the platform will do nothing but help Mount in rediscovering his focus and form.
