Manchester United agree Mason Mount fee

Chelsea and Manchester United have agreed a fee for the transfer of Mason Mount.

After a long saga which seemed to grind to a halt a week ago, a breakthrough has been found and suddenly everything can be wrapped up very quickly, assuming personal terms were agreed a long time ago.

Chelsea were holding out for £70m while United weren’t willing to go above £55m. In the end, it seems a £55m deal with a potential £5m in add ons has been agreed.

It’s a bitter blow for Chelsea fans who largely won’t have wanted to see their home grown favourite leave – let alone to a rival – but things in football are never simple, and clearly there has been a colossal breakdown in relations behind the scenes between this ownership and Mount.

It’s a sad moment for the club really, but we just have to look forward to the future now. It leaves Chelsea even shorter in the middle of the pitch, and it’s very hard to see players like Conor Gallagher following Mount, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek out of the door.

Moises Caicedo is now a top priority signing in the middle, and we will likely now need another player to come with him, unless our plan is to promote Andrey Santos and Cesare Casadei immediately.

It’s certainly not an ideal start to the Mauricio Pochettino era.
