Enzo Fernandez’ move to Chelsea was the conclusion of one of the more thrilling Januaries in memory.
After a hectic month where we were buying players from all over Europe, and selling some mainstays of the team, everything looked to be wrapped up. Then on the final day the Enzo saga (which had appeared to be over earlier in the month) suddenly went from 0 to 60, and by midnight (or just after) he was a Blue – in exchange for £107m to Benfica.
We haven’t heard much from his end about what happened, so these quotes in the Daily Mail from the Argentine are revealing:
“It was a very intense week. The negotiations were very long, there were a lot of obstacles. Benfica didn’t want me to leave and I have to say it was a very stressful week that took a lot out of me psychologically,” the midfielder said.
“‘But it all turned out the way you would want, and I was able to make that jump to play in the Premier League for a huge club like Chelsea. But yeah, it’s true that there were some days and hours where I couldn’t sleep, I was anxious not knowing what was happening but at the end of the day it was all worth it.”
Given how he had to end things so badly with Benfica to get the move, and given how terrible things were in those 6 months, Enzo would have been forgiven for regretting forcing the move in January. But it seems like in fact he’s happy he did, and is ready to be a key player in the new era of Chelsea.
