You can laugh at preseason tournaments all you like, but winners win, and after such a memorably depressing year of supporting Chelsea, seeing the Blues lift any trophy at all was a joy. It was a half hearted effort – but that exactly what you want in these circumstances.
Interestingly it was Reece James who captained the team today, so it was he who got to lift the trophy. Mauricio Pochettino has so far insisted that he’s not yet decided who his captain would be, and that he wouldn’t decide until before the first game of the season.
But today was the first clue that James, who is likely favourite alongside Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell, could be his choice.
