Chelsea have just announced on the club’s official website that they’ve completed the signing of Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution in Major League Soccer.
The 23 year old was considered one of – if not the – best goalkeeper playing in MLS last season, and
He has two Serbia caps and has rapidly grown his reputation over the last 12 months, since making the big move from his native country to the USA. He was nominated for the “newcomer of the year” and the “goalkeeper of the year” after his first and only season playing there.
Petrovic had the following to say at his unveiling:
“It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Today I have achieved that goal and I’m so happy.
“Playing in the Premier League is something I’m really looking forward to doing and I hope to learn many things here at Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge.”
Our sporting directors had the following to say about their latest acquisition:
“Djordje improves an already strong goalkeeping team. We look forward to watching him work under Mauricio Pochettino, goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez, and the rest of the first-team staff this season.”
It’s widely expected that he will be used as a backup for Robert Sanchez, who has Premier League experience and cost a lot more. But there can be no doubting that if Sanchez struggles, it won’t take a lot for the hot prospect to be given a shot.
