“A lot of money. A lot of money” – Chelsea’s attempts to sign 18 year old failed despite huge offer

Chelsea have signed so many players in the last year that it’s actually pretty rare to find a deal that didn’t come off.

On deadline day, there were sudden reports of interest in Club Brugge striker Antonio Nusa, and we’ve now had confirmation from the player himself that there was indeed a concrete offer. His quotes picked up by Goal.com reveal that the 18 year old knew all about the late interest in buying him:

“I already knew [the transfer] wasn’t going to happen, but then the money came on the table,” Nusa explained.

“Then it’s seen in a slightly different way. We had to have another conversation when the money arrived, but we were on the same page, so there was no problem there. I knew what to do anyway, so it was fine. [The offer was] a lot of money. A lot of money. But I try not to think about it so much. I can’t focus on that, you know. I don’t think it’s good for me.

“We are talking about very big clubs and that’s where you dream of being in the future. I try not to think about money at all. There’s a lot of money in football, so that’s not what’s on my mind. It’s where I can develop best and become as good as possible.”

It sounds like we will be back for the wonderkid before too long – although who knows how much he will be worth by then.

There are other interesting details in the piece – firstly that he was only going to be bought if outgoing deals for Conor Gallagher or Ian Maatsen were completed (they weren’t) and secondly that the idea of loaning directly back to Brugge was on the table.
