Romano denies that attacking midfielder was ever on Chelsea’s shortlist

Fabrizio Romano has been looking back at this summer’s transfer window, and he had some interesting information on a player who Chelsea were constantly linked with in the summer.

Rayan Cherki is considered one of the brightest talents in French football, and is part of the struggling Lyon team who are in a nightmare situation right now. There were multiple links to Chelsea, but Romano has dismissed them all:

“Despite links, Rayan Cherki was never an option for Chelsea in the summer, I don’t know why there were so many rumours on Cherki and Chelsea but they always had different plans and it was tactical reason,” Romano wrote.

“For sure it’s not an easy moment at Lyon for him, it’s also understandable to be in tense situation when things are not working… I’m sure there are many clubs keen on signing him in case he will be available.”

Without any inside knowledge, this does line up with what we thought. Cherki is clearly a talented player, but once Christopher Nkunku was signed it always seemed unlikely we’d go for Cherki too, given the makeup of the rest of the squad.

We were even slightly surprised by the move for Cole Palmer later in the window – although that was after Nkunku’s injury. Now Palmer is doing so well that we can’t ever see a Cherki move taking place.
