Chelsea qualify for FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 as part of farcical new format

In a hilarious twist, Chelsea have qualified for the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup, the first edition of which will take place in June to July of 2025.

FIFA’s “council” has just announced a new format for the competition which will see the US host an expanded tournament in the summer, with a complicated qualification methodology in place that has thrown up Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man City as the last four winners of the competition, plus of course whoever wins this year’s edition.

Much like the new Champions League format, it perfectly demonstrates the push to make sure the big clubs with the most fans qualify for the big tournaments, regardless of any recent sporting merit.

The fact that in 18 months Chelsea (who by that point may well be a League 1 team at the rate they’re going) will be competing for the title of the world’s best club illustrates just how silly the idea is.
