Ben Chilwell makes his return – but his position is controversial

It was something that frustrated and puzzled Chelsea fans from the first minute of the first game of the season, and it looks like it’s back.

Ben Chilwell played those first games of the season before his injury on the left wing, with Levi Colwill at left back. Today, making his long awaited return from injury, Chilwell came on in place of Raheem Sterling as a like for like replacement in exactly that position.

Now we know Mauricio Pochettino would defend this (as we heard him do earlier in the season) by saying in reality Colwill plays more tucked in as a wide centre back and Chilwell plays on the left wing. But it’s still a distribution of resources that most Blues disagree with.

Perhaps today’s decision was made because Chelsea were defending a lead. Given that, we will be very interested to see the next few lineups that Pochettino picks.
