Ian Maatsen has had a brilliant start to life at Borussia Dortmund after signing on loan from Chelsea.
The defender went on loan with a £35m option to buy – but that option is open to anyone, not just the team loaning him. That means that if he continues to excel, bigger or richer teams are bound to muscle their way in and at the very least inflate the left back’s price.
This is always the risk Dortmund were taking of course. In a way, they will have been hoping he was good, but not so good that there’s a lot of competition for his signature this summer.

As a home grown player, Chelsea will be keen to rake in as much for Maatsen as possible. The sporting directors will be rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of getting more than £35m for him this summer.
