Chelsea’s star signing left on the bench for biggest game of the season – how we got here

Christopher Nkunku’s absence for the first half of the season was the single most repeated reason for why Chelsea struggled. Fans, pundits and the manager alike mentioned it every time the Blues’ struggles were questioned.

But now he’s finally back and fit – he can’t get in the team.

It’s a pretty shocking turn of events, given the buildup. In preseason he looked like the dream signing to upgrade our attack, bringing class and creativity between the lines as well as a goal threat. But Mauricio Pochettino clearly doesn’t like what he has seen in the chances he’s given the Frenchman since Christmas.

We’re sure he will get his chances again in the games to come, but just as against Man City a week ago, Pochettino prefers to start with Nicolas Jackson’s industry, Cole Palmer’s creativity and Raheem Sterling’s speed and one on one ability.

Nkunku will be waiting for his chance to come off the bench and make the game his own.
