“It was so clear… it’s so difficult to understand” – Pochettino finally opens up on dreadful

Chelsea were well beaten by Liverpool in midweek, but things could have been very different had the referee given the Blues an obvious penalty after just a few minutes.

He didn’t nor did he give a similar penalty in the second half. After the game, Mauricio Pochettino refused to blame those bad decisions, focusing instead on his team’s bad performance.

But today in his pre-Wolves presser, Pochettino was able to open up a little. His comments on the penalty incidents were calm, and he even had a wry smile on his face, but his thoughts were clear:

“After five minutes, we had one [penalty]. It was so clear. And after you see the decision last night, that one maybe wasn’t so clear. And similar situations with the same person, and it’s two different results. It’s so difficult to understand.

“We were not so good. Liverpool was better after 90 minutes. But if different things happen, maybe it provides us the confidence and the trust, maybe the direction of the game will be different.”

We rather like this strategy. It means that he can’t be accused of making excuses, as on the night itself he was totally focused on his team’s poor performance. But with a couple of days gone by, and with the temperature having fallen, he can make his real feelings clear.
