Cole Palmer got two crucial assists last night against Crystal Palace, but was otherwise unusually quiet, especially before Christopher Nkunku came on. The front 3 didn’t really function with Palmer as a false 9 and Nico Jackson on the left wing. Sky Sports had a debate today about whether this had hurt Palmer.
We actually identified this problem before. If Jackson is best on the left wing, Palmer on the right wing and Nkunku playing off a striker, you logically can’t have the 3 of them all in their best position. You either have to add a new striker and lose a midfielder, or play one out of position.
