Chelsea midfielder returns from international break early in slightly mysterious circumstances

Chelsea have just announced that a player who was international duty has returned to the club early – but for once its not bad news.

Usually in these circumstances you’d expect the player to have been injured, but in this case Carney Chukwuemeka is “returning early to work on his fitness at Cobham,” according to a statement just put out on the club’s website.

The midfielder was called up for his first trip with the England U21 side in this break, but after mysteriously missing out on the squad for their first game, he’s now come home before the second.

We’re not sure what the full story is here – why call him up if you’re going to send him home after one game? Did he picked up a small injury that ruled him out of the first game? That still wouldn’t explain why he wouldn’t stick around for the second. The statement from Chelsea doesn’t mention an injury.

In any case, the important thing is that he will soon be back training with Mauricio Pochettino’s group, and looks very likely to be involved – and perhaps even starting – on Saturday.
