Chelsea to set up cub wide set piece department

Chelsea are going to create a dedicated set piece department following a club wide review carried out last summer.

The Blues are looking to recruit specialist set piece coaches to work in the new department despite Mauricio Pochettino dismissing the idea last month.

The Argentine claimed that “football belongs to the players not the specialists” and insisted his coaching staff were capable of working on set pieces.

The new set piece department won’t solely focus on the first team and will be club wide following last summer’s review.

According to Telegraph Sport Chelsea have already sounded out potential candidates to work in the new department with there being a possibility that more than one than one set piece coach could be appointed.

Given how Pochettino has always worked so closely with his coaching team it remains unclear how closely any new set piece coaches would work with the 51 year old.

Pochettino was dismissive of the idea and speaking before February’s 4-2 defeat at home to Wolves said the Blues were looking for a specialist set piece taker rather than coach.

The Argentine said: “We have specialists coaches, we are a coaching staff in charge of everything. You can have a specialist and you can promote the specialist. Or you can have the specialist and not promote the specialist.”

“It depends how you want to sell the idea of working on set-pieces. We have a specialist, we have a group of analysts for set pieces, we have the coaching staf and we work a lot.”

“And then it is about the quality. At the moment, we were talking about trying to find a good specialist player for next season.”
