“They struggle a little bit to deal with the pressure” – Pochettino on young squad

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted some of his players are struggling to deal with the pressure of playing for Chelsea.

Chelsea’s inexperience has been well documented with the club focused on signing the best young talent from around the world since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their takeover in May 2022.

As a result of signing players who might not be at their best for several seasons the Blues have really struggled for consistency and to see games out which is part of the reason Pochettino’s men find themselves in the bottom half of the table.

Chelsea is the biggest club a lot of these players have played for in their careers to date and Pochettino admitted some are struggling with the pressure of playing for the club.

In quotes picked up by The Standard he said: “Yes, we are in a process in which, of course, the main group, the main young players, of course, they struggle a little bit to deal with the pressure to play for Chelsea.”

“That is the thing we are aware of and are focusing on trying to help them in all areas. Because when you have this young squad, it’s not only to help them in training. We have spent a lot of time talking, talking with the people that work around these guys, who are important, too.”

The Blues lack of experience is highlighted by the fact Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Reece James are the only three players still at the club that featured in the 2021 FA Cup final against tomorrow’s opponents Leicester City.

The domestic cups have taken on extra importance this season given the poor league form and Pochettino will be desperate to book a return to Wembley to help ease some of the pressure on him.
