The TalkSport debate about who should be in the England squad picked out Raheem Sterling as their favourite example yesterday.
The winger is in bad form for Chelsea but has a million England caps – should he still go to the Euros? Would Harry Kane be picked if he didn’t score for ten game? It’s an argument as old as time that Darren Bent and Andy Golstein were having.
One could even say it goes broader than that, and extends to every national team. In fact the smaller the pool of top players one has, the stronger the argument for picking those who are good players, regardless of whether they’re in good form.
