Big exclusive lifts lid on Chelsea’s status in chase for one of the world’s top wonderkids

This morning we reported on Sky Germany’s story that Jamal Musiala was a top target for Manchester City, with Chelsea also trying to stay in the race for the wonderkid’s signature.

That story, with information from Patrick Berger, has now been backed up by top insider Christian Falk, whose Daily Briefing column also named the Blues in the hunt. With two years left on his current contract, Musiala is about to enter a crucial stage, and the tension is only going to rise as the months tick by.

“”Manchester City are seriously interested in Jamal Musiala. Liverpool and Chelsea are also keeping an eye on the Bayern star,” Falk wrote.

“That said, it’s not like Musiala is putting pressure on his employers to leave Munich. First talks will be with the management of Bayern Munich.”

As a former Chelsea academy player who was stolen away from us before he ever made a first team appearance, the attacking midfielder’s return is a dream for many Blues fans.

Chelsea’s long term trajectory

It seems very unlikely that Musiala moves this summer, in any case. He’s still got two years left to run, and Bayern will be determined to show him that they can turn things around quickly and go back to being a winning machine from August.

Getting to the Champions League semi finals this week was a useful reminder to him that there are few clubs he could move to where success is more likely than at Bayern. If he still hasn’t signed a new deal in a year’s time, that’s when things suddenly open up, but for now this pause suits Chelsea.

We will need to make a major leap forward if we’re to convince one of the world’s most talented players that we’re a suitable destination, so we need all the time we can get.
