Latest update reveals when Levi Colwill could return from surprisingly severe toe injury

Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Brentford a month ago was the tipping point for a lot of fans. There was a lot of negative songs being sung in the away end, and it was also the game which prompted the open letter from the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust to the ownership.

It was also the last game Levi Colwill played for us. After that we heard some chatter from Mauricio Pochettino about a toe injury, but it all sounded very minor. But as the weeks have passed and we’ve still not seen him return, we’ve come to realise this is a proper injury.

Simon Johnson of the Athletic has the details. He actually picked up the injury in the win over Crystal Palace in February, and then played through injury the Carabao Cup final which followed. It seems he’s damaged the joint in one of his toes, a pretty painful and tricky injury for a footballer, no matter how minor it may sound.

Since then he’s spent time in a protective boot as he’s raced towards recovery, but he’s still some way off returning. Johnson and Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard have ruled out a return in the next couple of games, claiming that Colwill  “hopes to return to face Everton” in the game later this month, with an eye on getting some minutes under his belt so that he’s fit to face Man City in the FA Cup final in two weeks.

That gives us an important new option at centre back, with Trevoh Chalobah also hoping to recover in time for those games.
