Chelsea defender set to miss FA Cup semi final against Manchester City

Levi Colwill is expected to miss Saturday’s FA Cup semi final against Manchester City through injury, a game he had been aiming to return for.

Colwill has impressed for the Blues after returning from a successful loan spell at Brighton last season, but has missed the last few weeks with a toe injury.

It had been reported that the England international was targeting a come back for the semi final against City but that now appears unlikely.

Mail Sport have reported the 21-year-old is now set to miss the showdown at Wembley as the Blues look to book their place in a second domestic cup final of the season.

It’s a blow for the Blues considering how well Colwill performed alongside Axel Disasi in the draw at the Etihad earlier this season.

It’s not just Colwill’s defensive abilities Chelsea have missed it’s also his range of passing, which pundit Jamie Redknapp described as exceptional after the 1-1 draw with Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, Chelsea did record their first clean sheet for 13 games on Monday night against Everton, which would suggest Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah have done enough to keep their places even though Disasi is expected to be available again.

Another Cobham graduate, defender Alfie Gilchrist scored his first Blues goal in the rout of Everton.

Colwill has featured a number of times at left back this season, as well as in the heart of Chelsea’s defence, and the academy graduate has made 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

Despite another largely disappointing campaign Mauricio Pochettino’s side still have a lot to play for, as well as the FA Cup they are still in the hunt for a top six finish, which would secure Europa League football for the Blues next season.

Chelsea sit 9th in the table but are only three points behind Newcastle and Manchester United with a game in hand, but face a difficult run of fixtures with trips to both Arsenal and Aston Villa to come next week.
