“We have a very good relationship” – Pochettino opens up on Blues star following Monday night’s penalty chaos

Mauricio Pochettino has opened up on how Noni Madueke has reacted following Monday night’s penalty incident against Everton.

The penalty row somewhat took the gloss off a superb performance from the Blues, as Madueke and Nicolas Jackson argued over who should take a second half penalty before Palmer eventually scored.

Madueke posted a picture of him and Pochettino smiling together on his Instagram earlier this week in a sign there was no issue with the pair following the incident.

When asked how the winger had reacted after the debacle the 52-year-old said in quotes picked up The Standard:

“We have a very good relationship but he is a young player who has made a mistake even in the situation that happened on Monday which was a mess.

“We saw the news everywhere but sometimes when they don’t talk in a good way it is good because Chelsea are appearing to the whole world and players need to understand how to deal with this situation.

“But I am happy with him in the last few months, apart from the incident with the penalty, he is trying to understand what we expect from him. The most important thing with these kids is they need to look at what we and the club expect.

“It is not easy for them. They need clear ideas and leadership from people who can spend energy and time to deal with many situations that come up. When you have a young squad you need to be careful.”

Madueke joined Chelsea from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has found opportunities limited since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

When he does get on the pitch the winger has shown the ability he has, scoring goals and changing games from the bench.

The Blues have so many options in the attacking areas and competition is fierce but the 22-year-old has started the last two Premier League games against Sheffield United and Everton.

He’s made 26 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing one assist.

Madueke will be hoping he retains his place in the staring line-up for the FA Cup semi final against Manchester City as Chelsea look to make their second cup final of the season.
