Three important notes from Chelsea training that could tell us a lot about Pochettino’s options for the rest of the season

Chelsea were back in training today following a day off to lick their wounds after the heavy defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

There were three things that picked up on from the Blues’ session back at Cobham.

Firstly, and most importantly, the players who were present at the session. That included Reece James, Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer, all of whom have been out with injuries of varying severity.

We don’t expect James to be back for some time, given how long he’s out, but training now gives him a chance to see the pitch before the end of the season.

Colwill has been out for a bit, and will probably need a week of training before Mauricio Pochettino is ready to select him. But he could be in contention for a place on the bench as soon as next week.

The second was the player who was missing. The rumours are that Enzo Fernandez is going to have surgery on a groin injury seem to have been confirmed by his absence today. By all accounts, that’s his season over.

The third is a little more silly: Nicolas Jackson’s new haircut. Now we’re not the types to police what footballers do with their style. They’re welcome to do what they like, if their performances merit it. Jackson has largely been good this season, at least in terms of effort.

But debuting an ostentatious blue and white hairstyle on the day that you get involved in a penalty dispute which reveals you to be utterly self-centred is not a good look. Let’s hope this new buzz cut is an indication of his willingness to cut out the silly stuff and get to work on improving the weaknesses in his game.
