Three key positions Chelsea want to strengthen this summer – if they can raise £100m

The Evening Standard are this morning reporting that Chelsea are focused on three positions to strengthen this summer: striker, left back and central defender.

Like most fans who have been watching this season, they’ve come to realise that there remains no convincing number one option at centre back, despite a plethora of solid players. None of them really looks complete enough to be a star for us.

The same is true of Nicolas Jackson up top. He could be a very good player for years to come, but he’s not so good we don’t still want to sign a goalscorer. The less said about the left back catastrophes of the last few windows, the better.

Quite how the ownership intend to find the money needed to strengthen like that is another question. Most people are saying £100m will have to be spent before we even get back to 0 on the summer.

A squad still full of holes

Football of course is an endless battle to keep refreshing your squad and keep things young and dynamic. Standing still is going backwards. But still, given we’ve bought such an unprecedented number of players over the last 2 years, it’s still frankly quite amazing that there are so many holes in the squad.

Beyond what’s already mentioned above, there increasingly looks like a need for a new top class central midfielder to play with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, plus none of our goalkeeping options really convince.

Add it all together and you’ve got a team which still basically needs players in every position, immediately after having bought players in every position.
