Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has claimed Frank Lampard pleaded with Chelsea to sign him before he ended up joining Manchester City.
Chelsea have signed their fair share of strikers over the years, with varying degrees of success, but more often than not they haven’t lived up to expectations.
Other than Didier Drogba and Diego Costa the Blues have really struggled to find a top class striker over the last 20 years, with the likes Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata and Andriy Shevchenko all failing to live up to expectations.
Sergio Aguero could have joined Chelsea?
For all the strikers the Blues did sign it appears they missed out one of the best in Premier League history despite signalling their intent.
Aguero, who is the fifth highest scorer in the competition’s history with 184 goals, revealed that Chelsea were interested in signing him after coming up against him in a Champions League game in 2009, but never followed up on their interest.
“After that game [for Atletico Madrid against Chelsea in 2009], my agent told me they were interested in signing me”, the Argentine told The Club YouTube channel.
“I love the Premier League, I wanted to play there, but Chelsea never really followed up their interest after that.”
Aguero also said that after Lampard joined City in 2014 the Chelsea legend told him how he had asked the Chelsea board to sign him in 2010.
“I spoke about that with Frank Lampard because Frank Lampard played at Manchester City,” Aguero added.
“He said when I played against him, he told the staff at Chelsea to sign Aguero.”
The prospect of Aguero linking up with the likes of Lampard, Drogba, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard is mouth watering, but knowing Chelsea’s luck with signing strikers he wouldn’t have lived up to expectations and his career would have turned out very differently.
