Premier League boss praises Mauricio Pochettino’s handling of £62.5m man

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi believes Mykhailo Mudryk is improving at Chelsea despite a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Mudryk arrived in west London in a deal worth an initial £62.5m from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk following a very public transfer saga with Arsenal in January 2023.

The 23-year-old struggled in his first six months at the club following a brilliant debut against Liverpool but has shown signs of promise this season.

De Zerbi’s message to Mudryk

The Ukraine international has started Chelsea’s last six league games which has helped him find some rhythm and consistency.

He’s particularly impressed in the last three games against Tottenham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest, where he scored a well taken goal to give the Blues the lead.

Having not scored in his first six months at the club Mudryk has found the back of the net seven times in all competitions this season, with five of those coming in the league, which included a brilliant solo effort against Newcastle.

De Zerbi has praised Pochettino for his handling of Mudryk.

De Zerbi knows Mudryk well having managed him at Shakhtar and previously said he has the quality to win a Ballon d’Or.

The Italian believes the winger is improving, but feels there’s still plenty of room for development.

“I think he’s improving”, De Zerbi said in quotes picked up by Sussex World.

“I think it was tough for him, changing country, changing the level of difficulty of the league.

“The competition inside of Chelsea’s squad is higher than Shakhtar.

“But he’s a smart guy, he loves football and I think the management of the club, of Pochettino, has been right because now he’s playing very well and he’s a big, big talent.”

It’s clear Mudryk possesses great talent and it’s been seen in glimpses this season, but it’s now down to the winger to keep working and unlock his full potential.
