Ipswich chief executive would “love” to have Chelsea youngster at the club next season

Ipswich Town chief executive Mark Ashton has said that he would love to bring Chelsea youngster Omari Hutchinson back to the club.

Hutchinson joined the Blues on a free transfer from Arsenal in 2022, and made two appearances for the first team last season.

The 20-year-old was sent on loan to Ipswich in the Championship where he shone as the Tractor Boys won promotion back to the top flight.

Hutchinson established himself as a key player at Portman Road despite initially starting on the bench, but as he continued to impress he soon became a mainstay in the team.

The winger was named Championship Player of the Month for February, as well as being named Ipswich Player of the Month on three separate occasions.

At the club’s end of season awards he took home the Young Player of the Year award, having scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 44 Championship appearances.

Hutchinson has stated he would like to return to Ipswich next season, but reports have said he will be assessed by Mauricio Pochettino in training at Cobham before deciding what the next step is.

Ipswich chief executive Ashton has spoken of how he would love Hutchinson back next season, but it will take a little bit of time to sort out.

“Listen, you never know”, Ashton said in quotes picked up by the East Anglian Daily Times.

“It’s really early at the moment, what Kieran’s [McKenna] done with Omari from day one, how he’s developed him, is incredible.

“He’s gone from a bit part player, to a mainstay in the team, to someone who has really impacted the team.

“We’d love to have him here for sure, but that would mean discussions with Chelsea, with his agent, with him, with his family etc, all of that will take a little bit of time.”

Hutchinson has one year remaining on his current deal, and it would seem to make most sense to offer him a new contract and send him back to Ipswich to gain valuable Premier League experience, which would be the most logical next step for his career.
