Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy has described Marc Cucurella as a “revelation” following a tactical switch which has seen him invert into midfield when the Blues are in possession.
Chelsea continued their late season resurgence with a resounding 5-0 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, making it back to back London derby wins.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring with his 21st league goal of the season, whilst Nicolas Jackson bagged a brace with Conor Gallagher and Noni Madueke also getting themselves on the scoresheet.
Cundy impressed with Cucurella
Key to Chelsea’s resurgence has been Cucurella inverting into midfield to create a 3-2-2-3 when in possession and provide an extra man in midfield which has massively helped with build up play, and also appears to have helped Moises Caicedo.
The switch, which occurred at half time against Aston Villa has not only breathed new life into Cucurella, it’s also transformed Chelsea’s performances on the pitch.
The Spaniard looks like the player Chelsea paid Brighton over £60m for in 2022, and has put in two brilliant performances against Tottenham and now West Ham.
Former Blue Cundy singled the 25-year-old out for praise after the win describing him as a “revelation.”
“He’s been excellent, what a revelation”, Cundy told Chelsea’s official app.
“Cucurella, there’s a bravery about him, there’s an energy about him.
“Whatever you think he doesn’t seem to give up, there seems to be a real purpose about his game.”
Cucurella’s future at Stamford Bridge is in doubt, with the club believed to be open to selling him this summer, and he almost joined Manchester United on loan last summer.
However, if the former Brighton man carries on performing like this then that decision needs to be urgently reconsidered.
The left back has been limited by injury to just 23 appearances in all competitions, with 18 of those coming in the Premier League.
