“Neither party want a reunion” – Fantasy of fan favourite manager’s return must end after latest development

The Athletic’s piece today on Mauricio Pochettino weighs up his future and whether the former Spurs boss will be staying for the second year of his contract.

It’s felt unlikely at times, but everything is now falling into place to some degree. One important factor that always has to be considered is who might replace him, and as it stands there are just no outstanding candidates out there who would persuade Chelsea that blowing up this whole project is worth it.

One man who continues to be linked is former coach Thomas Tuchel, who is the dream candidate of many fans. But it’s never felt likely, and this piece dismisses the idea out of hand:

“Is there an obvious guaranteed upgrade available [to replace Pochettino]? Former Chelsea managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte are out of work, but would their demanding personalities click with this set-up and project? It is not as if it was all smooth sailing when they worked under the previous regime, despite their trophy haul. Tuchel is looking for employment for when he leaves Bayern Munich, but neither party want a reunion.

Coming to a conclusion on a coach’s’ future

The point of this piece is that Pochettino will be staying in the job, and it certainly feels that everything is pointing that way now. All along it was clear that those in charge would keep their appointed man in place if possible, and this late run of good form is making it easy to ensure he’s in place next year.

Getting into Europe looks likely if we get through these final games with 3 wins, the squad have seemed happy with Pochettino all along, and now there’s visible progress being made in terms of the product on the pitch.

Just as things reached their most gloomy, the Argentine looks to have found the right formula to secure himself in the job.
