New Champions League team emerge in race for Chelsea starter who will play final game tomorrow

While Conor Gallagher has been linked with a departure from Chelsea for some time, the list of possible destinations has remained short and pretty vague.

Tottenham have always been on the list, and Newcastle’s name has been mentioned a lot too. But today an exclusive from Matt Law adds a new name with very strong interest – Aston Villa. The Midlands club have just secured Champions League football for next season, and will need to make major additions to their squad to compete in that competition without compromising their Premier League form.

They apparently see Gallagher as the perfect addition to Unai Emery’s contract, and think they can sign him up. There is still no progress on a new contract for Gallagher at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea’s priority appears to be to sell him this summer while they can still get good money in the deal.

Law points out that there is a “good relationship at board level” between Chelsea and Villa, which should help a deal move along.

A heart breaking result for Chelsea fans

Gallagher’s stance isn’t clear. We can only assume he would ideally like to stay at Chelsea, the team he’s grown up with. But if they’re not offering him a new deal he can accept, he may have to go, and Villa are certainly looking like an upwardly mobile team with

It will be utterly heartbreaking for Blues fans, who will lose a much loved player as well as one of this season’s best performers. Not only that, he will go to one of our major rivals in terms of trying to fight our way back into the top 4.

If Gallagher does leave – and sadly that certainly looks like the direction things are going despite how patently mad it is – that will make tomorrow’s game his farewell.
