PSG’s loss is Chelsea’s gain as Blues find themselves back in race for elite striker

Over time we’ve seen Victor Osimhen’s chances of coming to Chelsea diminish – at least it’s felt that way.

The striker felt like a perfect fit for a long time, and it was only the serious cash tied up in Romelu Lukaku which prevented us from bringing him to Stamford Bridge. But as the last two seasons have seen us struggle in mid-table, and as we’ve spent so heavily on other players, the idea that we’d be able to tempt the Nigerian, either financially or competitively, has seemed more far fetched.

Plus there’s also been the emergence of PSG as a serious contender. With Kylian Mbappe leaving this summer, they will have the budget and the space in their squad for a new attacker.

But French football expert Johnathan Johnson’s latest column for CaughtOffside has given Blues fans some hope with his latest update on his take on the Parisians’ stance:

“Victor Osimhen to PSG is another story making the headlines at the moment, and while I don’t know if he’d be their absolute priority target, he certainly is a name that they’ve looked at, along with Benjamin Sesko, [but] I don’t think that a new number 9 like Osimhen solves the issue of replacing Mbappe,” Johnson mused.

“I think names like Bernardo Silva and Bruno Guimaraes, that kind of profile, could come up higher on PSG’s list than someone like Osimhen,” he concluded.

A slim chance is now growing again

It’s still hard to see how Chelsea could square up the vast transfer fee necessary to sign Osimhen, along with his monster wages, with their current PSR and FFP issues. But the fact that PSG are less keen is an important boost.

Napoli want to cash in and PSG may not be there to oblige, if that happens and the summer starts to pass, we could well see demands falling and the whole situation playing into our hands.
