The two positions Chelsea will target in the summer according to Arsenal legend

Paul Merson has had it right all season. When Chelsea were getting slated he pointed to the positives. Now they’re suddenly looking good, he’s not getting too carried away.

When everyone predicted us to lose he backed us for unexpected wins, and he called out the mad project underway at the club before most pundits were willing to.

With all that said, we’re curious to see what he makes of our mini revival and our prospects for next season, so we were keen to get stuck in to his Monday column on Sky Sports. It didn’t disappoint:

“Chelsea haven’t been consistent enough… They’re doing well at the moment, fair play, and they’re right in the race for Europe. They’ve got into a final, a semi-final… and it could turn out to still be not a bad season,” the former Arsenal defender wrote.

“But they’ll have to go and buy players, and not sit and think that they got it right all along. No, they haven’t. They’re miles off Man City and Arsenal. You’ve got to look at the all-round picture… They probably need an experienced centre-half to take Thiago Silva’s place, and they could do with another centre-forward too.”

Much to consider

Chelsea fans would agree with Merson, by and large. It’s been a bad season which wasn’t far off being good. Football is like that sometimes. But he’s also right in zooming in on what’s needed this summer. Nicolas Jackson has impressed everyone but the fastest way to improve this team would be to sign a really good to striker to work with him.

As Merson points out, losing Thiago Silva is going to be a blow on and off the pitch, and replacing him is perhaps the most delicate task for the sporting directors. It will be very interesting to see what direction they take.
