“It’s quite weird”- Tony Cascarino shares what he finds strange about current Chelsea ace

Former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino has shared what he finds “quite weird” about midfield star Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez, who arrived for a then British record fee of £107m from Portuguese club Benfica in January 2023 made an instant impact in Graham Potter’s struggling side.

However, the World Cup winner has struggled in his first full season at Stamford Bridge with fans only seeing glimpses of his quality.

The 23-year-old’s struggles this season can certainly be put down to the fact he’s been playing through injury for six months and taking pain killing injections to help him get through games.

Eventually the Argentina international underwent surgery on a troublesome hernia problem and missed the final six games of the season.

Fernandez is recovering well and is now preparing with Argentina for this summer’s Copa America, where he is sure to play a key role for his country.

Fernandez has had a difficult first full season at Stamford Bridge.

Incoming manager Enzo Maresca will be tasked with getting the best out of Fernandez and trying to form a partnership with Moises Caicedo, who after a slow start really impressed as the season went on.

Fernandez will certainly be hoping his fortunes change under the Italian, with former Blue Cascarino suggesting Maresca’s first task will be to establish what the Argentine’s best role is.

“You can watch him for Argentina and you could watch him play for Chelsea, and you’re not really sure if he’s a holding midfielder at times, he’s an attacking midfielder or just centrally matching up Caicedo,” he told talkSPORT.

“It’s quite weird how he’s floated in that midfield position with no absolute certainty of what he is.

“He is a really good footballer, you don’t play for Argentina and play for big clubs like he has, he’s a talented lad, it’s getting the best out of him.”

Fernandez is facing a busy summer and also wants to represent Argentina in the Olympics, something according to reports Chelsea aren’t keen on as they want him at pre-season with Maresca, although a final decision has yet to be taken.
