Chelsea’s “preferred choice” is clear in problem position; Arsenal ready to contest Blues

Our writer Simon Phillips has spoiled us today with a great exclusive about Chelsea’s interest in signing a new striker this summer.

It’s long been a problem position for us – in fact Didier Drogba and Diego Costa have been the exceptions rather than the rule over the last 20 years as we’ve constantly struggled to find consistent goalscorers up top.

Nicolas Jackson showed a lot of promise in his first season, but he can’t do it alone, and it’s no surprise to hear from Phillips that Chelsea are getting into gear to sign another forward. With other options fading into the background, it looks like our number one target is now Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig.

“It is Sesko who I am consistently hearing about with Chelsea. Arsenal like him too, but Chelsea have been pushing the hardest so far,” Phillips wrote on his Substack.

“Sesko is our preferred choice of striker target right now due to the lower cost and lower agent fees involved. There’s confidence building around this one, but nothing is done or close yet because Arsenal are also keen. I’ve also been told that no final decision has been signed off for the new striker yet, but Sesko is up their with the top priorities for that position.”

A sensible move for a very talented player

Even without this confirmation from Phillip’s sources, this always felt like the most realistic move for Chelsea this summer. Victor Osimhen is so expensive, while as Phillips points out, Sesko is relatively affordable, and even has a release clause to prevent things getting out of control on the cost front.

Arsenal can offer Champions League football and a more stable project right now however, and it may prove difficult to persuade Sesko he’s better off at Stamford Bridge in the next stage of his career.
