Now that the Euros is over, Chelsea’s sporting directors can finally really get into gear sorting out the squad for next season. A few interesting additions have been made, but nothing major. There are also potentially some significant departures to deal with.
One of the priorities is figuring out what will happen with Conor Gallagher. At the moment the situation is stuck in the same place it’s been for a while – he’s not any closer to signing a new contract, but nobody is really offering the kind of money it would take to sign him from us.
Reports coming out in the last few days seem to indicate that that could be about to change though. There’s more and more chatter about a long rumoured bid from Tottenham finally getting off the ground soon.
Getting down to brass tacks
The Athletic’s report on the situation claimed that Chelsea wanted valued Gallagher at between £40m and £50m. But TeamTalk’s update today claims that “Spurs are confident they can secure a deal for around £30m.”
That’s very cheap for a Premier League regular and capped England international of 24 – but then again with one year left on his contract there’s only so much anyone will be wiling to pay. He might even decide he’d rather run down his deal and leave for free.
Their article on the subject also explains how Spurs aim to generate the transfer funds and the wage bill space to sign Gallagher. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fell out of favour under Ange Postecoglou last season and the plan is to sell him on, along with right back Emerson Royal.
The two of them being moved on for a decent price should generate a good chunk of the £30m+ Spurs need to try and make serious attempts to sign Gallagher.
