Tosin Adarabioyo’s free agent signing took place so long ago now that it’s easy to forget about it, but his presence in the starting lineup for both friendlies has been a reminder that he’s now set to be an integral part of this squad.
Football.London had some interesting information about the former Fulham defender and what he was expected to do this season by the sporting directors who gave the move the green light:
“The 26-year-old completed a move to Stamford Bridge last month after leaving Fulham on a free transfer,” they wrote.
“The Blues wanted to sign Adarabioyo because they believe his ability in the air and composure on the ball will be key attributes to help their defence, football.london understands.”
Two important factors for 2024-2025 Chelsea
Tosin is clearly a good talent, and was ready for a step up. If Chelsea hadn’t signed him, another team above Fulham in the table certainly would have. Newcastle were linked, and European teams would have surely been keen if they had the ability to pay his wages.
Adding that aerial presence will be vital. That’s something the team really lacked last year. The composure on the ball will be particularly useful for new manager Enzo Maresca and his style of play, which is going to lean heavily on defenders and his goalkeeper to circulate the ball for long periods of the game. After coming through the same Man City academy where Maresca worked, Tosin will be expected to be very comfortable doing just that.
Is he really going to be a world class defender who elevates the whole team to another level? That’s less certain. But he should help shore up one major weakness and add one major strength to this new look team.
