Ex-manager of Chelsea’s new £35m man explains what he must do to become a top player

Alaves head coach Luis Garcia believes Samu Omorodion needs to demand more of himself if he’s going to become a top player.

The Blues are set to sign the Atletico Madrid striker in a deal worth £35m and it’s thought the 20-year-old will sign a seven year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have been in the market for a striker this summer, but despite signing teenager Marc Guiu from Barcelona they have wanted to add another forward and they are now closing in on their man.

Omorodion needs to demand more of himself

A whole host of names from across Europe have been linked with the club and the Blues were interested in Omorodion earlier this summer, and reportedly had multiple bids rejected by Atletico for the Spain under-21 international.

Some reports had suggested Atletico wanted around €60-€70m but Chelsea always retained their interest and an opportunity presented itself as the La Liga side pursued Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez.

The Blues moved quickly and agreed a deal worth £35m and the club’s have a good relationship with Conor Gallagher set to complete his move to the Spanish capital

Omorodion is currently at the Olympics with Spain and is preparing for the Gold Medal Match against hosts France.

The striker is a raw prospect and was signed by Atletico last summer before spending the season on loan at Alaves where he scored nine goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.

Omorodion obviously has a lot of developing to do and Garcia his manager at Alaves believes he needs to demand more of himself if he’s going to become a top player.

“He’s a player with a privileged physique, imposing just looking at him,” he said.

“Big, strong, fast, wants to learn and improve. His movement into space is very good, and he wins a lot of duels, he needs to demand more of himself to become a really top player.”

It remains to be seen when Omorodion will make his debut, but you would expect the opening game against City to be too soon.
