21-year-old opens up on adapting to life at Chelsea after arriving last summer

Malo Gusto has revealed there were “good vibes” all around when he arrived at Chelsea and believes it was a really good decision to join the club.

Gusto arrived last summer, although a deal was agreed with Lyon in January 2023 but he spent the remainder of the campaign on loan in France.

The 21-year-old has been arguably one of Chelsea’s best and most important signings under the new ownership given the injury issues which have plagued Reece James in recent years.

The Frenchman made an instant impact and hit the ground running in his debut campaign at the club as he racked up nine assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

The biggest complement that Gusto can be given is when James isn’t available he’s not missed anywhere near as much as he would’ve been in the past.

Gusto is a doubt for Saturday’s game against Bournemouth due to injury.

Gusto certainly settled in and adapted to life in the Premier League quicker than many would’ve thought and he puts that down to there being several French players already at the club and there being good vibes all around when he first arrived.

“It’s cool because there is a lot of French players,” he said in a video on Chelsea’s YouTube channel.

“There is just good vibes all around when I first arrived. Even before I signed, there were 3 -4 teammates, I think Reece that instantly DM’ed me, like ‘welcome, bro’. It was a really good decision to come here. I can’t lie.”

Gusto has shown his versatility this season and his role has differed slightly as he’s been asked to invert into midfield, something which he’s done well at the start of the season, whilst he also showed in pre-season he could do a job at left back.

However, the right back is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth after he picked up a muscle injury in the draw against Crystal Palace, but with James also a doubt it looks like Axel Disasi could be in line for his first Premier League minutes of the season.
