“It’s where I am heading” – Chelsea’s Unsung hero opens up on plans for the future

Third choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has opened up on life under Enzo Maresca and his plans for after his playing days are over.

Bettinelli is in a unique position at Chelsea where he knows he’s very unlikely to play but he’s established himself as a popular member of the squad following his arrival from Fulham in 2021.

In fact the 32-year-old has only made one appearance for the Blues during his time at Stamford Bridge, but it’s clear he still plays a key role even if he doesn’t feature on the pitch.

Chelsea’s current first choice goalkeeper is Robert Sanchez, whilst the Blues also signed Filip Jorgensen this summer, with Djordje Petrovic being sent on loan to Strasbourg despite impressing last season.

There appears to be a good feeling amongst the squad and a lot of the players have said how much they have enjoyed working and playing under the Italian.

Whilst Bettinelli is unlikely to get any game time under Maresca he’s opened up in a recent interview about how much he’s enjoying working under the 44-year-old.

“I had a fantastic relationship with Mauricio, the same with Graham [Potter] and Thomas [Tuchel], who brought me in,” he told The Athletic.

“I have known Enzo Maresca for only a short time, but I really enjoy working with him.”

Bettinelli also opened up on his plans for the future and revealed he wouldn’t be going into management, but would be doing his goalkeeping badges.

“I definitely don’t want to go into management, I have seen how hard it is! I did my UEFA B coaching badges with Thiago Silva and Cucurella.

“I will definitely do my UEFA A goalkeeping badges. It’s where I am heading. I really enjoy helping young goalkeepers.”

Bettinelli will be watching on as Chelsea look to record back to back wins for the first time in the league this season when they face West Ham on Saturday.
