“I thought Chelsea should’ve looked to sign him” – Pundit makes shock transfer suggestion

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson admitted he was surprised Chelsea didn’t bring a striker in this summer and gave a shock suggestion as to who they should have signed.

The Blues were once again busy in the transfer window with a number of new names coming in and despite signing attacking talents Jadon Sancho, Joao Felix and Pedro Neto they failed to bring a centre forward in.

Chelsea tried for the majority of the summer to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli but despite months of negotiations they couldn’t reach an agreement on personal terms with the Nigerian.

Osimhen subsequently joined Turkish giants Galatasaray on loan for the season, although there’s a break clause in the deal for January, and it’s possible the Blues could reignite their interest in the 25-year-old.

Chelsea are now left with Nicolas Jackson and 18-year-old Marc Guiu as their only recognised centre forward options, although both Felix and Christopher Nkunku could be deployed through the middle if needed but it’s not ideal.

The Blues were linked with a whole host of strikers throughout the summer and Merson made a shock suggestion as to who he feels they should have signed.

Merson feels Chelsea should have signed Fullkrug this summer.

“I feel Niclas Fullkrug can make an impact in this game (Fulham vs West Ham). I’m a big fan of his and he scored for Germany during the international break,” he told Sportskeeda.

“I thought Chelsea should’ve looked to sign him. It was a bit of a surprise to me when they did not make a move.

“The Blues don’t have a proper striker at the moment.”

Fullkrug ended up joining West Ham in a deal worth around £27m, but at 31 years of age he’s not the profile of player Chelsea would have looked at as he doesn’t fit the club’s recruitment model.

The Blues will have to hope they can get by until at least January with their current options and then reassess the situation in the winter window.
