Romano exclusive: Chelsea not considering selling £53m investment despite his issues

Fabrizio Romano has taken to an exclusive for CaughtOffside to deny that Chelsea are considering selling Romeo Lavia little over a year after signing the Belgian, who has barely seen the pitch in that time due to injury.

The Italian insider comprehensively shut down whispers that the former Southampton player could be on the way out at Stamford Bridge after just 14 months as a Blue.

“Sticking with Chelsea, the stories in the press about Romeo Lavia are absolutely not true. Chelsea are very happy with his talent and skills,” Romano wrote.

“Of course he’s been unlucky with injuries but Chelsea are supporting Romeo, waiting for him, trusting his talent. Spreading negative stories with zero confirmation of that is not the best for the boy, there’s nothing in these stories at all.”

Chelsea frustrated – but a long way from panic stations over midfielder

We’re sure Chelsea are immensely frustrated by Lavia’s injury issues so far – as frustrated as us, and with far more riding on it. But that doesn’t mean they’re about to give up anytime soon. At this point, the only thing we want to see is him back on the pitch and playing for a few weeks in a row. The clear division between A team and B team this season should mean that he’s able to be handled with great care. There’s no need for him to play more than 60 minutes a week, if that’s what it takes to get him up to speed.

The fact that Lavia has looked really good in the brief moments he’s been able to play will help his cause too.

If by the end of this season he’s still not been able to play consistently, that’s when we really start to worry.
