Top-rated Chelsea player was only Blue to complete two through balls in timid creative performance

Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool at Anfield today was a mixed bag. there were really good moments as well as some disappointing lapses.

The Blues dominated the game for a spell in the first half, but a lack of cutting edge and shaky moments from their goalkeeper and defenders meant they ended up losing 2-1.

But some players did manage to shine, and in particular Moises Caicedo had a good game, despite getting shaken up early on. He got a 7.0 rating on WhoScored, second only to Nicolas Jackson for Chelsea. That was mainly down to the two accurate through balls he played – the only two on the team. They were both counted as “key passes,” and one of them was an assist.

He deserves huge credit for the pass he slid through the defence to set up Nicolas Jackson for the equaliser. The focus tends to be on his defensive skills, but that was a perfect assist which got the team back to the game.

Caicedo and Lavia look perfect fit once again

Caicedo’s partnership with Romeo Lavia once again looked really promising – we wish we had seen more than a handful of minutes of it over the last two years. Lavia had great moments too, and we feel strongly they should be the starting pair at the base of midfield, with Cole Palmer OR Enzo Fernandez ahead of them.

Against weaker teams especially, that pairing should dominate the middle of the park and continue to feed our attackers in dangerous positions and in transitions. Against stronger teams, they can break up attacks and keep the ball well.

Enzo Maresca could well use them both next week, but if we see one of them in the Conference League from the start, we can be confident they won’t play against Newcastle at the weekend.
