“Among the best” – Gianfranco Zola cannot understand why Manchester United sold player

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola says that in England, they cannot understand why Manchester United allowed one player to leave in the summer.

There was some big deals that happened in the summer and also, perhaps some surprise ones too. We saw a lot of ‘PSR’ deals happen as well. So basically, clubs signing players from one club, and then that club signing a player off of them to balance books for Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Chelsea basically did with to sell Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa, they signed youngster Omari Kellyman in return. And then they also signed Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid, so they could sell them Conor Gallagher. Obviously this is nothing official and just an opinion, but it looks like many clubs did this over the summer due to the rules.

And Zola believes that this is what Manchester United might have done in some way or another, because he cannot see another reason why they allowed midfielder Scott McTominay leave the club to join Napoli in the summer.

McTominay has been superb in Serie A

Zola has claimed that Napoli made one of the “best signings of the last summer” and the sale of McTominay has baffled people in England.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, he said: “He is among the best signings of the last summer.

“Here in England, they can’t understand how Man United could let him go. Perhaps it was a decision tied to the Financial Fair Play, but they haven’t digested it.”

McTominay has already been rumoured to make another move in the summer, but he’s admitted he ignores the noise.

“I don’t read the newspapers or social media,” he told The Times last week.

“That’s something I stay well away from. There’s no reason for me to pay attention to that.

“The past is the past. I’m enjoying my football and just want to do everything in my powers to push my team higher up the table and do my best for my manager in Italy as well.”
