Ben Foster shares why “everyone is kind of eating a bit of humble pie now” in regards to Chelsea

Ben Foster believes people are starting to eat humble pie about Chelsea following the criticism about the amount of players they had on the books.

The Blues have exceeded people’s expectations and currently sit third in the Premier League, just a point behind Manchester City in second.

Enzo Maresca hasn’t been phased by the big step up from the Championship and he’s adjusted to life at Stamford Bridge very well with Alan Pardew claiming he looks comfortable at the club.

Chelsea were heavily criticised over the summer for the size of the squad and it seemed like almost every day there were features on how many players the club had and how Maresca would manage the situation.

The situation was made out to be much worse than it actually was with a number of those players being moved on and Maresca maintained the whole time he was working with a group of 20-25.

However, now the season has started that criticism has somewhat disappeared and the Blues are in a luxury position of being able to field virtually two different teams, and Darren Bent has been impressed with how the 44-year-old has managed the squad.

Given the demands of the modern day calendar having the options Chelsea have is very beneficial and allows players to be rested and rotated as appropriate to minimise risk of burnout and injury.

Foster now thinks following that criticism many people are starting to eat humble pie in regards to Chelsea’s squad.

“Going back to the start of the season, we were almost ridiculing Chelsea for the amount of players they’ve got,” he told his YouTube channel.

It’s hard to argue with Foster and a lot of clubs would no doubt like to be in Chelsea’s position as we enter the busy festive period.

Chelsea’s squad depth will be on display again on Thursday against Heidenheim in the Conference League with Maresca likely to make 11 changes ahead of a huge game with Aston Villa on Sunday.
