£10m signing on fee could put Chelsea off signing efficient free agent goalscorer

Jonathan David’s future is being debated again, with the Lille striker now heading towards the end of his contract and serious transfer talk starting afresh.

CalcioMercato note that tonight’s Champions League game sees David’s team take on Juventus, one of the sides most interested in signing him. He’s had a great start to the season in his “contract year” – 3 goals in 3 in the Champions League, including efforts against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, plus 7 in 10 in La Liga.

Chelsea are described as “the most fearsome rival” for the Old Lady in terms of trying to sign the Canadian international. The Blues have long been linked with David as they’ve struggled through years without a consistent goalscorer, and he’s consistently maintained a 1 in 2 goal record at club level with Gent and now Lille.

With Nicolas Jackson in form now, however, and with Christopher Nkunku unable to even find minutes off the bench, it’s tough to see us finally making out move now. Even on a free transfer, he won’t come cheap, with this piece claiming a €10m signing on fee is what it might take.

David prepares for another year of offered around Europe

Jonathan David has become something of a running joke among fans of Chelsea and other teams because of the way he has been hawked around Europe like this for years and years.

Every summer– and most Januaries – the agent talk fires up, we hear he’s a favourite option for top club X, Y and Z… and then nothing happens. This falls into that category for us. He’s quite clearly got talent and eventually his price will fall low enough that someone takes a punt, but up until now, for whatever reason, nobody has taken the plunge, and that in turn seems to scare off others.
