Former Blues defender Jason Cundy has named the current Chelsea player who has ‘got a real problem right now’, and maybe he’s right.
The way Enzo Maresca has been using his big squad full of quality so far this season is that he has been using two completely different starting line ups, one for league games, and a different one for cup games.
EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea pick main candidate for new full back transfer pursuit!
This is a way to keep the squad largely content and get the fringe and backup players playing some football. It also helps keep injuries down and keep on top of fatigue in a heavily congested season playing plenty of games.
What this also does though is it tells Chelsea players whether Maresca sees them as a first team starter or not, so it’s clear where players stand in this squad right now.
And Cundy believes that Enzo Fernandez has a real problem right now as he drops down to the second string Xl due to Maresca picking Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia ahead of him as his midfield pivot.
Best midfield in the league?
Keeping a player like Fernandez, who cost over £100m, out of the starting line up is a massive achievement and really says something.
Lavia and Caicedo seem to be forming a great partnership, and Cundy is impressed.
In words cited on X, Cundy said:
“Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo in Chelsea‘s best team are the pivot, they are the two. Enzo Fernandez has got a real problem right now, that’s why he will start against Noah — because he won’t start against Arsenal.
“I can’t think of a better [midfield] two than Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo in the Premier League right now.”
Caicedo has been colossal, and Lavia certainly looks a very assured all round midfielder that compliments him. As for Fernandez, who knows what comes next as the rumours of a him leaving begin to surface.
