A manager has been speaking on making one of his 20-year-old Chelsea players the captain of his side for the very first time this weekend.
Chelsea have so many quality players in such a large squad now; everywhere you look there is serious competition and players going to be getting unhappy with not playing as much as they think they should be.
EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea stepping up pursuit of Premier League striker – not Evan Ferguson!
Joao Felix started the game on Saturday and you just know this is what he would have been waiting for and hoping for; a chance of staking a claim in the first team. And it came and he played well. But there are so many others who will be hoping for their chances now as well.
Not only do Chelsea have all these players in the squad fighting to start games and competing with each other for minutes, they also have some quality players who are ripping up trees out on loan this season.
None more so than midfielder Andrey Santos, who is having an incredible season playing for Strasbourg again this season.
Santos was made captain
In the absence of usual captain Habib Diarra, Santos wore the captain’s armband for the first time for Strasbourg in their 2-1 defeat to OGC Nice on Sunday night.
Despite the defeat, Manager Liam Rosenior was happy with the performance of his captain on the night. “He was great. He constantly shows professionalism every day in his work, he constantly wants to improve and constantly trains at 100%. There were other players that had a worthy cause to be captain but I felt that Andrey was the right choice. I felt that he didn’t do the armband any disservice at all,” said the Englishman, in response to a question posed by Get French Football News.
A leader in the making.
