Enzo Maresca thinks the opposite to some fans over Chelsea’s style of play

Enzo Maresca has made a promising start to life at Chelsea in terms of results. With 10 games played, Chelsea are higher in the table than many people would have predicted at this stage. Fans are largely happy with how things are going.

If they were forced to pick out one disappointment, it might be that the team are playing a pretty reactive style of football. It’s exciting and working well, but it’s not showing the calculated quality in possession that we were told to expect from a Maresca side.

But the coach sees it a different way. In fact, he sees the opposite. He thinks his team have made more progress towards where he wants to be than he would have expected:

“You imagine how you want your team to play. The question is, how long do we need? The nice thing is, I imagined the team playing in one way, and I can already see that. We can do many, many things better. But it’s a very good feeling,” the manager said in quotes picked up by Sky Sports.

“In terms of process and time, it’s not something you can say in six months, one year, it’s completed. At the beginning especially, it’s up and down. No doubt that, working everyday, it’s something you can get better and better.”

Chelsea’s perfect chance to show progress under Maresca

Whatever your take on how Maresca’s team has progressed, today provides a huge test. He’s got one point from games against Man U, Man City and Liverpool this season, and this fourth test against a top side has to see a Chelsea team that at the very least pushes a wounded Arsenal all the way.

We can worry about style later – let’s get a big home win on the board to kick this impressive first season up a gear.
